Shark Facts and Research

  • Worldwide there are around 70-100 shark attacks a year, 5-15 of them being fatal
  • There are more shark attacks than the annually reported number because not all of the attacks are reported
  • Shark attacks are increasing every year because of the increased number of beach/water-goers
  • There are 3 main types of attacks: Hit and Run, Bump and Bite, and Sneak attacks
  • Hit and run attacks usually occur within the surf zone with surfers and swimmers being the victims
  • Bump and Bite attacks are defined as the shark circling its prey and then bumping into it before it actually attacks
  • Sneak attacks are simply attacks that occur without warning
